A wide-ranging selection of music associated with the British Isles, including Vaughan Williams' 'In Windsor Forest' and excerpts from Handel's 'Acis and Galatea' , with our Associate Soloist Debra Finch, together with up and coming baritone Matthew Palmer and soprano Miriam McCombe. Other composers featured include Benjamin Britten, Ivor Gurney and Peter Warlock. The concert also includes two first performances of pieces by local composers: Kieren Hancock's setting of Christina Rosetti's 'A birthday' and Mark McCombs's setting of Thomas Hardy's 'The darkling thrush'.

St Andrew's Psalter Lane, 19:30

Copland, Tippet, Weill and Richard Rodgers are just some of the composers featured in this concert, which not only showcases our present Associate Soloist, Rosie Williamson, but also includes appearances by her predecessor, Matthew Palmer, and next year's Associate, Debra Finch. A highlight of the evening will be the rarely performed Misa Criolla of Ariel Ramirez. It's a 1960s work fuelled by exciting folk rhythms from his native Argentina and was a tribute to human dignity, courage and freedom that originated in a visit to Germany in the aftermath of the Second World War. We also commemorate George Gershwin's death 75 years ago, with two piano preludes performed by our Musical Director, Peter Dutton, while Rosie Williamson marks the occasion with Summertime, perhaps his most famous song, from Porgy and Bess.
