About Us

About Us

We are a mixed choir of 60+ members and have been an established part of the Sheffield music scene since 1969. Our 2009/10 season culminated in a very successful 40th anniversary concert, featuring the Requiem composed by Ron Law, who founded the choir in 1969.

We sing a wide range of music from the choral repertoire, and are equally at home with full-scale requiem masses and unaccompanied part songs. Visit the concert archive section on the concerts page to find out what we have been singing in recent years.

We regularly work with local soloists, accompanists and orchestras, and have particularly enjoyed the three concerts with the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Ewa Strusinska. We are also keen to encourage young musicians in the Sheffield area. With this in mind have have recently set up an associate soloist scheme.

We generally give about four concerts a year, mainly in the western side of Sheffield, including a popular Christmas concert featuring seasonal music and readings and rounded off with mulled wine and mince pies.

Associate Soloist

The Associate Soloist scheme was set up with the cooperation of Sheffield University Department of Music. It offers a young singer the opportunity to work with a local choir for a whole year and to receive financial support to further their development towards a professional singing career.

Our first Associate Soloist (2010-11) was baritone Matthew Palmer. For 2011-12 we have appointed soprano Rosie Williamson, who graduated with BMus, first class honours, from the University of Sheffield in 2009. While at university, she was a member of the University of Sheffield Chamber Choir and sang as the soprano soloist in various performances, including Mozart's 'Coronation Mass' and J.S. Bach's Cantata No.140. More recently, Rosie has performed as the soprano soloist in Mozart's Missa Brevis and Britten's Missa Brevis for Cantaremos and Jonathan Willcocks' Lux Perpetua for Sheffield Oratorio Chorus. She played the principal role of Pocris in the UK and Irish premieres of the 17th-century Spanish opera 'Celos aun del aire Matan'. She has also appeared in many musicals, including 'Sweeney Todd' (Johanna), 'Beauty and the Beast' (Babette), 'Company' (Marta) and 'Oklahoma!' (Laurey). In September 2011 she sang First Boy in 'The Magic Flute' with Sheffield City Opera..
